Play Therapy:

Using adult techniques is not appropriate with children. Their main mode of communication is play, a serious business for them. Play fits in what we call depth psychology. Subconsciously we convey a lot by our non-verbals and our selection of symbolic objects for our play. Play can be a huge metaphor of life. Special training is required to utilize play therapy. Val has been working via play therapy with children for 14 years, and the innate intelligence of children, their subconscious understandings and ability to self-heal through play continues to amaze her.

Best progress is with parents “on the team,” not being intrusive but prepared to also learn by filling the role of a “therapeutic partner” when appropriate. Child ages most appropriate are 3-12 years, but expressive arts such as drawing, painting, clay work, writing, movement, sound and sand-tray are appropriate for older children and adults as well. What is a song, but an expression of the composer’s inner life and feelings and opinion? Val is trained in Expressive Arts too.

Many adults have lost their playfulness and are reluctant to “let it all hang out.” Don’t worry! No one will ever force you to be “expressive.” Val follows your lead.
